Class Day

2023 Class Day Committee

The tradition of the Princeton Class Day dates back to the early 1850s, and in 1898 it was described as “a day over which the Graduating Class has full charge and which we run to suit ourselves, in our characteristic way.” Although seniors no longer smoke long white clay pipes before smashing them on the cannon, Class Day still features student speeches, remarks by the University President, and the presentation of awards. During the 21st century, prominent Class Day speakers come to entertain and advise the class; recent speakers have included filmmakers, comedians, actors, and public servants. Other elements of the contemporary Class Day exercises include the presentation of the symbolic key to the campus by the president, the induction of honorary class members, and the singing of “Old Nassau”.

The Class Day ceremony is an informal and fun celebration; seniors wear class jackets and are dressed informally. Due to the procession, seniors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, wear sunscreen if needed, and bring a water bottle if it is expected to be hot.

Step Sing

10PM

Step Sing is a beloved, uniquely Princetonian tradition, and one of the most exciting memories created during the Commencement weekend. For more than 250 years, Step Sing has brought students and their families together on the eve of Commencement for a vibrant, unforgettable community sing along. Traditionally, members of the senior class will lead their fellow classmates in singing a program of songs; some new, some nostalgic, and some traditional Princeton songs. All are welcome to join the chorus of joyous voices. Favorites are chosen by the members of the senior class from the most memorable hits from their time on campus, and are performed alongside throwbacks from decades past and classic Princeton tunes, including ”Goin’ Back to Nassau Hall,” and  “Old Nassau.” Finally, the graduating class also take this opportunity to honor and thank those members of the Princeton University community who have helped them over the years.
